Once upon a time I used to be the most confident s.o.b. youād come across.
Often times my superior confidence was mistaken for arrogance.
But then I got married.
Amiright or am I right, fellas?!
Haha, I kid I kid.
No, in all seriousness, I came to realize that my confidence as a kid was rooted primarily in my sheer, undeniable, border line unhealthy fearlessness. I wasnāt afraid of sh*t, yāall.
But then I had a wife and kids to protect, to provide for, to guide and leadā¦
And if Iām being honest, it scared the hell out of me.
Could I do it?
Was I worthy?
Hereās how I took my life back.
I built an unshakable, unbreakable, bulletproof self belief force-field around myself.
So no matter how many times my wife tells me I aināt shit
(šIssssa joke, all my married men get itš)
My confidence is no longer rooted in my abilities but rather in my intentions.
Let me say that again.
āāMy confidence is no longer rooted in my abilities but rather in my intentions.āā
And, I noticed my confidence began to grow and grow with each promise I kept to myself, no matter how small or āinsignificantā it may have seemed. More importantly, I noticed its growth as I mental notes of those kept promises. Keeping track helps!
Allow me to explain:
Confidence should be rooted not in your abilities but more so in your intentions (listen to one of my mentors discuss this very topic):
Focus on the Process: When confidence is rooted in intentions rather than abilities, the emphasis shifts from outcomes to the process. Instead of fixating on whether you have the skills or talents to succeed, you focus on your intentions, such as your commitment, dedication, and effort. Effort is huge. By prioritizing the process, you cultivate a resilient mindset that can weather challenges and setbacks, irrespective of your perceived abilities, or lack thereof.
Authenticity: Intentions reflect your authentic desires and values. When your confidence is rooted in your intentions, it is aligned with your true self. This authenticity breeds a deeper sense of confidence because it radiates from a genuine connection to your aspirations and purpose.
Empowerment: Placing confidence in your intentions empowers you to take meaningful action, regardless of external circumstances or perceived limitations. This sense of empowerment fuels your confidence because it reinforces your belief in your chances to shape your own destiny. It's damn near impossible to doubt yourself when you feel empowered.
Resilience in the Face of Adversity: Confidence rooted in intentions enables you to persevere in the face of adversity. Even when outcomes fall short of expectations or challenges seem insurmountable, your confidence remains unshaken because it is anchored in your intentions rather than external validation. This resilience allows you to bounce back from setbacks and continue pursuing your goals with unwavering determination.
****Itās important to note, this one only works if you follow through with your intentions. For example: if your big presentation fell flat at the corporate meeting but you know you busted your ass and your intentions were solid then you can and should stand tall regardless BUT if a goal of yours is to not hit your snooze button and wake up immediately off the first alarm BUT you never do it, well, then saying, āat least I intended to not hit my snoozeā doesnāt quite cut it, now does it?
Andā¦
Confidence is gained and grows based on the promises you can keep to yourself:
Self-Trust: Keeping promises to yourself builds a foundation of self-trust. When you consistently follow through on your commitments, whether it's sticking to a workout routine, meeting deadlines, or pursuing personal goals, you demonstrate to yourself that you are reliable and capable. This consistent behavior reinforces belief in yourself and strengthens your confidence.
Integrity: Fulfilling promises to yourself is an act of integrity. It aligns your actions with your values and strengthens your sense of identity. When you honor your commitments, you reinforce your sense of self-worth and integrity, which are essential components of confidence.
Accountability: Making and keeping promises to yourself fosters a sense of accountability. You hold yourself responsible for your actions and outcomes, empowering yourself to take ownership of your life. There you go, empowering yoāself again!
Positive Feedback Loop: As you consistently keep promises to yourself, you experience a positive feedback loop. Each success reinforces your confidence and motivates you to set and achieve increasingly ambitious goals. This continuous cycle of setting, pursuing, and achieving goals creates momentum and allows for you, too, to build that unshakable, unbreakable, bulletproof self-confidence shield as you take on each dayās battles!
